Overview

Millie and Severson is a leading general contractor focusing on industrial, office, educational, institutional, and medical projects. We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief Estimator to lead our estimating department as our current Chief Estimator will be retiring soon. The ideal candidate will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the estimating department including managing the estimation process for large-scale projects, and ensuring accurate bids for construction contracts. This individual will work closely with preconstruction, project managers, and clients to develop reliable and competitive cost estimates that align with project objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead Estimating Team: Supervise and mentor a team of estimators, providing guidance, training, and support throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Estimate Preparation: Oversee the preparation of detailed and accurate cost estimates for a variety of projects, including industrial warehouses, educational buildings, and medical facilities. Candidate should be able to prepare estimates for competitive bids as well as preliminary budgets from very conceptual documents.
  • Cost Analysis: Perform detailed cost analyses, including labor, material, equipment, subcontractor quotes, and overhead costs, ensuring all costs are accounted for and aligned with project scope.
  • Bid Development: Review project plans, specifications, and drawings to identify the scope of work and risks.
  • Collaboration with Project Managers and Clients: Work closely with project managers, architects, engineers, and clients to ensure all estimating criteria are met, adjustments are made to scope and budgets, and project goals are clear.
  • Business Development: Work closely with Business Development team to respond to client RFP’s and attend client interviews.
  • Supplier and Subcontractor Management: Identify, solicit, and evaluate bids from subcontractors and suppliers, ensuring all subcontractor packages are thoroughly reviewed for scope and pricing accuracy.
  • Value Engineering: Provide value engineering options that help clients achieve the best possible value without compromising quality, safety, or performance.
  • Risk Management: Identify potential risks related to cost, schedule, and scope and provide solutions or mitigation strategies.
  • Technology Use: Leverage estimating software, cost databases, and other tools to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the estimating process.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum of 15 years of construction experience including 10 years of estimating experience in commercial construction, with a focus on industrial warehouses, educational facilities, and/or medical buildings.
  • Leadership: Proven experience leading and managing a team of estimators, with a track record of successful project delivery.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and costs for industrial, educational, and medical sectors.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field preferred. Equivalent work experience will also be considered.
  • Software Proficiency: Expertise in estimating software (e.g., OnScreen Takeoff, Bluebeam, Bidmail) and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook Project).

  • Organization: Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Client Focused: Excellent customer service and relationship-building skills with clients, vendors, and project teams.

Working Conditions

  • Full-time position with standard working hours, although additional hours may be required to meet project deadlines.
  • Occasional site visits to review ongoing projects and collaborate with field teams.
